CFL: Elks sweep series against Stampeders with 23-18 victory

Eugene Lewis caught a 10-yard pass from Tre Ford with 69 seconds left in the game and the Edmonton Elks defeated the Calgary Stampeders 23-18 on Saturday.

Lewis also recorded a major on the ground for the Elks (6-11), as did reserve quarterback Dakota Prukop.

The Elks have won all three meetings between the two Alberta teams this season. The last time the Elks achieved this was in 2002.

Former Montreal Alouettes kicker Boris Bédé scored two singles for the Elks. Punter Jake Julien added one.

The Stampeders (4-11-1) built a five-point lead in the first quarter with a safety and a Rene Paredes field goal before giving up 17 straight points to the Elks.

Then, Jalen Philpot caught a touchdown pass from Stampeders starting quarterback Matthew Schiltz, while reserve Tommy Stevens reached the end zone with a run to give the Stampeders an 18-17 lead with four minutes 54 seconds to play .

The Stampeders had a chance to win on the final play after Lewis put the Elks back ahead, but Shiltz was unable to complete his pass to Reggie Begelton.

Shiltz completed 18 of 33 passes for 215 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He also advanced his team 64 yards with his legs. In the other clan, Ford reached his receivers 23 times in 29 attempts for 208 yards, one major and two thefts.

Justin Rankin ran for 140 yards in the victory.
