A convincing evening for Sam Gagner?

In camp with the Carolina Hurricanes on a professional tryout contract, forward Sam Gagner took full advantage of his last chance of the preseason schedule.

In the lineup during his team’s 5-3 victory against the Nashville Predators on Saturday, the former Edmonton Oilers had a goal and two assists.

He first became complicit in the success of young Bradly Nadeau in the second period, before himself giving the “Canes” the lead at the very end of the period. With exactly one minute left in the game, the 35-year-old forward added an assist on Eric Robinson’s second goal into an empty net.

Josiah Slavin was the other scorer for the Hurricanes. Mark Jankowksi, Cole Smith and Tommy Novak provided the Predators’ replies.

The sixth overall pick in the 2006 National Hockey League draft spent last season with the Oilers, amassing five goals and as many assists for 10 points in 28 games.

Maple Leafs big guns take charge

The Toronto Maple Leafs, who will play against the Canadiens in Montreal on Wednesday in the first game of the regular season, concluded their preparatory schedule well with a 3-2 victory against the Detroit Red Wings.

In the victory, Auston Matthews (one goal and one assist) and Mitch Marner (two assists) each had two points. It was John Tavares who scored the winning goal for Toronto on a power play in the third period.

Christian Fischer and Andrew Copp are the Red Wings players who made the red light shine.
