“It went very badly at the sessions”, Alban Lafont’s confessions on his struggles with last season

Before facing Olympique Lyonnais this Sunday (3 p.m.), on behalf of the 7th day of Ligue 1, FC goalkeeper, Alban Lafont, looked back on the 2023-2024 season, which was both complicated on the collective and also individual level.

A new chapter opened this summer for Alban Lafont. Having become the father of a little boy on September 3, the FC Nantes goalkeeper is a different player. More relaxed and “peaceful”, particularly due to fatherhood, he has turned the page after a particularly trying 2023-2024 season. On a collective level, the 25-year-old goalkeeper had a hard time coping with his team’s great difficulties in remaining in Ligue 1.

But the former resident acknowledges having also gone through a complicated period on an individual level. “I was looking for myself a bit,” he confided to L’Equipe on Sunday. “There were a lot of changes in my life, my dad was ill, but I was convinced that it wasn’t going to affect my football. I was defensive, even aggressive at certain times because I wanted everything control. I was so hopeful that the club would maintain itself, that we would do things well, that I let myself get caught up in a negative spiral. It showed in my season.

“There were times when I no longer wanted to train”

To explain this bad patch, Alban Lafont also highlights the instability on the Canaries bench where three coaches have succeeded one another. “It happened that I no longer wanted to train. And things went very badly during the sessions.” Especially since the collaboration with the former number 2, Rémy Descamps was far from perfect.

While the Neo-Lyonnais spoke of “a work colleague” about Lafont on Saturday in the columns of Ouest-, the latter recognized that the training sessions could have been better if the two goalkeepers had gotten along better. The two men should meet this Sunday afternoon at Groupama Stadium for OL-Nantes, poster for the 7th day of Ligue 1.
