Brazil-Argentina, a clasico against a backdrop of revenge

The final of the 2024 Futsal World Cup will pit Brazil against Argentina on Sunday in Tashkent, two regulars of these games who meet for the first time at this stage of the competition, in a clasico against the backdrop of revenge.

The Seleção, five-time World champion, and the Albiceleste, winner in 2016, have, in fact, played in all editions of the World Cup and have crossed paths seven times in six editions, during which the Brazilians have won six victories, against one for Argentina.

Brazil won its first global duel against the Argentines (6–3) in the second group stage of the 1989 edition. Argentina then finished last in its group, while Brazil won this edition.

The same scenario will repeat itself at the 1992 World Cup, won by the Seleção, which stopped Argentina (5–1) in the second group stage, and at the 2000 World Cup, which saw the Brazilians, winners of their South American neighbor (4-1) at the same stage of the competition, finishing in second place after their defeat in the final against Spain (4 – 3).

At the 2004 World Cup, the two selections crossed swords twice: in the second group stage, Brazil won against Argentina (2-1), but the two teams qualified this time together, respectively in as first and second in their group. They find themselves in a classification match for third place and it is once again Brazil which confirms its superiority (7-4).

After a 2012 World Cup which was no exception to the rule, with a new Brazilian victory in the quarter-final (2-3 ap) and a fifth title for the Seleção, winner of Spain in the final (3 – 2 ap ), Argentina has finally taken its revenge in the 2021 edition and at a sensitive stage of the competition.

That year, the Albiceleste ousted the Brazilians in the semi-final (2-1), before finishing second in the standings after their defeat against Portugal (2-1). Brazil won the classification match against Kazakhstan (4 – 2).

Despite this Brazilian superiority in global face-to-face matches, the 2024 final remains open to all predictions: Certainly, in their previous confrontations (all competitions combined), Brazil dominates with 66 victories, against eight for Argentina and 9 draws, but the clock seems to be ticking for the Argentinians, who are showing signs of progress.

Indeed, the first 28 meetings between the two South American teams were won by Brazil, but their last ten confrontations were balanced, with three victories for the Albiceleste, three victories for the Seleção and four draws.

Likewise, the two finalists displayed an exemplary performance during this World Cup with zero defeats and are presented with the most prolific players of this edition, namely Marcel (10 goals), Pito (5), Dyego (4), Marlon ( 4) and Neguinho (4), for Brazil and Kevin Arrieta (7), Alan Brandi (7) and Matias Rosa (4), for Argentina.

Brazil will play its seventh final. It has already won five, in 1989, 1992, 1996, 2008 and 2012 and lost one, in 2000. The Argentine selection will play its third final, after that of 2016 which it won and that of 2021 which she had lost. In its other participations, the Albiceleste notably finished fourth in 2004. The classification match will pit Ukraine against , just before the final.
