While the preparatory schedule continues in the National Hockey League (NHL), the first game of the regular season will nevertheless be played on Friday evening.
The Buffalo Sabers and the New Jersey Devils will cross swords in Prague, Czech Republic, as part of an NHL initiative to promote hockey across the globe.
This game will mark the official return of Lindy Ruff to the helm of the Sabres. The veteran hockey man, who led this team from 1997 to 2013, was rehired by the Sabers this summer; he succeeds Don Granato.
The Sabers are trying to end a 13-year playoff drought this season.
For the Devils, young defenseman Seamus Casey will make his NHL debut. Casey, who played with Lane Hutson in the American development program, spent the last two seasons at the University of Michigan.
This will be Sheldon Keefe’s first game at the helm of his new team, after being fired by the Toronto Maple Leafs.
