DAZN subscribers, the worrying figure

New Ligue 1 broadcaster since this summer, DAZN is still unable to attract a sufficient number of subscribers. The situation is seriously complicated.

The succession ofAmazon Prime Video for the broadcast of the French Ligue 1 championship was not an easy task for the Professional Football League (LFP). This summer, the body finally accepted the proposal to DAZN which was designated almost exclusive broadcaster for the period 2024-2029 for a sum of 400 million euros per season, while beIN SPORTS acquired one match per day, for 100 million euros per season. But DAZN also signed an exit clause planned for 2026 if the threshold of 1.5 million subscribers is not reached. And for the moment, the platform is still very far away.

Very, very far even, because according to information from journalist Abdellah Boulma, “DAZN currently only has a little over 100,000 subscribers across all of its distribution platforms”. A particularly worrying result for the moment, especially since the informant added that without a substantial investment, DAZN should not be able to sustain financially for more than two years. An outcome that takes on certain aspects of a fiasco Mediapro in 2020.

Commercial offers

Referring to the former and short-lived broadcaster who had pulled the curtain after four months, the sports economist, Pierre Rondeau, for his part recalled that “Mediapro withdrew even though it had more than 400,000 subscribers”. If the context is not exactly the same as four years ago, part of the problem remains the same: the number of subscribers is not sufficient and the money does not enter enough into the broadcaster’s coffers.

Aware of the excessively high price announced at the start, DAZN has since made an offer by lowering the monthly subscription to 19.99 euros per month. This offer ended at the end of September and was replaced by a new one:

a completely free trial

of one week for any new subscriber, with the possibility of withdrawing free of charge within the allotted time. A commercial proposal valid until October 13. In the meantime, the threat of a new fiasco remains.
