“It’s the first time I’ve made a mistake like this,” Niakhaté explains his blunder against Rennes

Having arrived at OL for 31.9 million euros this summer, Moussa Niakhaté has become the most expensive recruit in the club’s history. For his first official match with the Gones, on August 18 in Ligue 1, the Senegalese international brought the second goal for Stade Rennais (3-0) by making a back pass to Lucas Perri, his goalkeeper.

“When you just arrived at the club, it’s not the best thing to do”

Amine Gouiri had intercepted the ball to score. “Usually, it doesn’t happen to me,” Niakhaté said in an interview with Canal + Sport. “It’s the first time I’ve made a mistake like that. Afterwards, you can’t ignore it. You always have to analyze things and not close your eyes. It’s just something you shouldn’t repeat because it puts your team in a hole.”

“When you’ve just arrived at the club, it’s not the best thing to do,” added Moussa Niakhaté, who played for Nottingham Forest for the last two seasons. “That’s how it is, that’s my story with Lyon. It starts like that, the main thing is to rectify the situation as quickly as possible and show my real level and my skills.”

Pierre Sage had maintained his confidence in Moussa Niakhaté against Monaco (2-0 defeat) and against Strasbourg (4-3 victory). This Sunday (8:45 p.m.), Lyon will go to Lens for the rest of the championship before hosting OM on September 22. Diakhaté and his teammates will then launch their Europa League adventure, at home, against Olympiacos on September 26.
