The cruel disqualification of a Spanish marathon runner who loses her medal for an improbable reason

A dream gone for a trivial point of regulation. While she thought she had won the bronze medal in the marathon in the T12 category (reserved for the visually impaired), this Sunday, at the Paralympic Games in Paris, the Spaniard Elena Congost was finally disqualified.

Spain has lodged a complaint

The joy of the 36-year-old athlete, gold medalist in Rio, lasted only a few minutes, the time for the organization to announce its sanction. As the Spanish media specify, the strict rules of the marathon stipulate that the athlete must never cross the finish line after the guide who accompanies him.

However, Mia Carol, Elena Congost’s guide, is accused of having crossed the line before her by a handful of centimetres. A terrible disappointment for the Spanish duo, who had a lead of more than three minutes over their pursuers, and especially for Mia Carol who has already had a hard time finishing this race.

Handicapped by cramps in the final straight, he hung on until the end alongside Elena Congost. Considering that this was an unfortunate incident that in no way benefited the Congost-Carol duo, the Spanish delegation appealed to contest this disqualification.

“We have lodged a complaint,” the director of the Spanish Paralympic Committee, Alberto Jofre, confirmed to Relevo. While waiting for some hypothetical good news, third place in this marathon was taken by the Japanese Misato Michishita, behind the Moroccans Fatima El Idrissi and Meryem En-Nourhi.
