FOOTBALL – The world of football is going to say goodbye to one of its biggest stars. American international Alex Morgan, who played for Olympique Lyonnais between 2016 and 2017, revealed on Thursday, September 5 that she would retire from the sport after a final match with her club on Sunday.

The 35-year-old striker, double world champion in 2015 and 2019 and Olympic champion in 2012, made her announcement on social networks, in a video in which she appears very emotional. You can watch the images below.

“It wasn’t an easy decision. But as 2024 rolled around, I felt in my heart and in my mind that this was my last season.”she explains. On the verge of tears, she adds that her 4-year-old daughter, Charlie, was going to become “big sister” since the footballer is pregnant with her second child.

Alex Morgan said she will play her final match in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) on Sunday with her club San Diego Wave.

During her season at OL, she won a treble of French championship-Coupe de France-Champions League. In 14 years of international career, she scored 123 goals, becoming the fifth best scorer in the history of the American women’s team.

Alex Morgan also has nine World Cup goals and six Olympic goals. She last played for the United States in June against South Korea. “I grew up on this team. It was so much more than football”she explained.

She stressed “the friendships and the unwavering respect and support between us, the constant efforts to develop women’s sport worldwide, and the defining moments of success, on and off the field.”

The player is indeed known for her commitment to gender equality in sport. In the comments of her Instagram post, the athlete who pushed the limits of gymnastics Simone Biles also commented: “Congratulations on an incredible career, and thank you for elevating women’s sport.”
