Comolli supports Labrune and criticizes competitors’ “reheated” fare

LFP elections: Comolli supports Labrune and criticizes the competitors’ “reheated” fare

Damien Comolli has publicly supported Vincent Labrune ahead of the Professional Football League (LFP) elections. According to him, “the best person” for the project is the current president of the body, elected in 2020. But the Toulouse FC boss, who spoke at a press conference on Tuesday, September 3, was also very harsh on the other candidates.

“There is a lot of talk about taking stock of what happened. The assessment doesn’t really interest me, in fact,” he said. “What interests me is what we are going to do in the future to make French football even more competitive. What are we going to do to develop our product, to be attractive to foreign or French investors, to have more people in the stadiums, to have more people in front of the TV watching DAZN and beIN, to have more and more young people watching the matches? That interests me.”

“I haven’t seen any ideas that appeal to me.”

“And then who’s going to lead the project? So far, I haven’t seen anyone announce something where I think, ‘Wow, what a great idea!’ Not one,” he added, without naming anyone.

“I’ve seen reheated stuff, people who say they can do better than Vincent Labrune, that we’re all incompetent among the managers of L1 clubs. No problem, I accept it, that’s why I get up every morning questioning myself. No problem. But when they’re people who have never seen a locker room in their life, who have never managed a club in their life… They can say all day long that we’re not competent, frankly I have no problem with that. But come with ideas. And for the moment, I haven’t seen any that appeal to me,” he said.

At the helm of TFC since the summer of 2020 after having spent time with AS Saint-Étienne and Liverpool in particular, Damien Comolli aspires to join the board of directors of the LFP: “I am a candidate because I think by definition, perhaps through arrogance and arrogance, that I can bring something. I have now taken up positions with the ECA (European Club Association, editor’s note) and UEFA at the level of the club competition committee. I think I can bring something to the level of the CA of the League. I have learned a lot about the functioning of the League and the institutions of French football since I arrived, over the last four years”, he concluded.

Cyril Linette, who had been rejected for a while, finally obtained the second sponsorship needed to run for president of the Professional Football League (LFP) against the incumbent Vincent Labrune on September 10. The candidates had to collect two sponsorships: that of Foot Unis, the professional clubs’ union, and of the UAF (Union of Football Actors), bringing together the different “families” (players’ unions, coaches, doctors, referees, administrative staff).
