Turkish shooter Yusuf Dikeç saw his pose go viral during the Paris 2024 Olympics. He decided to protect its use.

Turkish Olympic shooter Yusuf Dikeç has filed a request with Turkey’s intellectual property institute to protect the commercial use of the pose that made him famous at the Paris Games, his coach told AFP on Monday.

“After being informed of numerous trademark filing initiatives carried out without Yusuf Dikeç’s knowledge, we submitted an application about a week ago (…) Other requests have thus been rejected.”the athlete’s coach, Erdinç Bilgili, told AFP.

Yusuf Dikeç, a silver medallist in the 10m pistol shooting event, became a global star after images of him shooting in an almost nonchalant manner, with his left hand in his pocket and without protective goggles or a helmet, went viral on television and social media.

Many athletes have copied his pose after winning an Olympic medal, including Swedish pole vault star Armand Duplantis. Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson also imitated him on Sunday when celebrating a goal in the English Premier League.

A number of products, including T-shirts, mugs and mobile phone cases, featuring his seemingly nonchalant yet confident pose have been put on sale, Turkish state news channel TRT Haber reported.

Contacted by AFP, TürkPatent, the Turkish institute responsible for the protection of intellectual property, did not immediately respond. “Some people thought that my hand in my pocket was a sign of arrogance. I do it only to keep my body more stable. You don’t have to look any further.”Yusuf Dikeç confided in early August in an interview with AFP.
