American Coco Gauff (world number three), defending champion, was eliminated in the round of 16 of the US Open tennis tournament by her compatriot Emma Navarro (13th) 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 on Sunday September 1 in New York.

Weighed down by sixty unforced errors and nineteen double faults on serve, Gauff, 20, won the tournament last year and reached the quarter-finals in 2022. The young American, semi-finalist at the Australian Open and Roland-Garros this season, has since suffered a series of disappointments.

In July, Gauff had been eliminated from Wimbledon in the round of 16 by Navarro, before leaving the Paris Olympics at the same stadium in tears, then losing in the round of 16 of the WTA 1000 in Toronto and in the second round of the WTA 1000 in Cincinnati (United States) in August.

After two first-round eliminations, Emma Navarro, 23, reached the quarter-finals for the first time at Flushing Meadows, equalling her best Grand Slam result, achieved in July at Wimbledon.

“It’s crazy to reach the quarter-finals after two first-round eliminations, in the city where I was born, it’s very special to win here”Navarro appreciated at the stadium microphone. “I have a ton of respect for Coco, I know she’ll come back to win”she added.

Navarro will face former world number two Paula Badosa of Spain in the quarter-finals, who earlier in the day beat China’s Yafan Wang (80th) 6-1, 6-2.
