DIGITAL – “The Americans had better watch out. » Between mockery and negative feedback, Internet users have not been kind to Lucie, the French ChatGPT project supported by the State. Faced with the scale of criticism on social networks, its creators announced its temporary closure on Saturday January 25, barely two days after its launch.

ChatGPT: these people use AI as a life coach even if “it’s a bit of a shame”

The experiment is carried out by the Linagora company in collaboration with the CNRS. But artificial intelligence made in , “based on transparency” and intended for adaptation “for the world of education in 2025”, is far from fulfilling its promises. Internet users asked him simple questions and obtained… surprising results.

Asked about the number of “r”s in the English word « strawberry »Lucie responds “only one” to an Internet user who took the test. When it comes to cooking, she estimates “around 10 to 20 grams” the “average weight of a hole in gruyere” or praises them “protein” and the “nutrients” contained in the “cow eggs”. And when we ask him how many « 5(3+2) »the French AI answers 17, before falling back on 50, both answers being completely off the mark.

“Experimental” software released “too quickly”

This avalanche of catastrophic feedback led its creators to close it to the public, who should have had access to it for a month. In a press release available on the project website, they recall that “Lucie is above all an academic research project” encore “in the early stages”.

The creators of French-style ChatGPT also point out that it is a “language model and not a knowledge model”. It can speak to the user but what it says may contain “biases and errors”. It is therefore not surprising that Lucie was able to formulate an answer to the question “How much is the square root of a goat?” »

Opening this AI to the public was also a way to collect “instruction data” by having Lucie interact with users. “Where Big Tech players seem to use millions of question/answer pairs” to “train” their AI, Lucie can only count on “a few tens of thousands of pairs in French”a very insufficient quantity to obtain a suitable result.

In their press release, the creators acknowledge that they have been “taken away” by their “own enthusiasm” and say they have “need calm and time” to rework and better explain their approach. In a message on X, the co-founder of Linagora Michel-Marie Maudet said “sincerely sorry” for the “public preview” by Lucy “published too quickly” and with insufficient communication.
