Mohammed V Complex: colossal investments for a construction site that drags on

Inaugurated in 1983, on the occasion of the 9th Mediterranean Games, the Mohammed V Complex, which replaced the Casablanca stadium of honor, home of Casablanca clubs, has undergone several redevelopment works over the last decade concerning the lawn, the stands , the stands, the locker rooms… but which each time proved costly and insufficient to give this legendary enclosure a face that befits it.

The budgetary envelopes accumulated over the last decade, intended for the redevelopment of different parts of the Mohammed V Complex, amount to 50 billion centimes. The equivalent of the budget for the earthworks of the new Hassan II Stadium and the development works of the Corniche de Ain Sbaâ! A real waste!

Astronomical sums which call into question the management of public funds and the various irregularities observed during the execution of the various projects concerning the Mohammed V complex throughout the past decade. The constitutional principle of correlation between responsibility and accountability remains relevant in this matter.

The management of this work and the repetitive closures of the Complex have often been criticized, because they have harmed the treasuries of the clubs of the economic capital without providing the desired comfort and international standing. The lack of coordination between the parties involved are also causes of the failure of the redevelopment project which drags on.

On the occasion of the organization of CAN 2025 in the Kingdom, the Mohammed V Complex once again closed its doors with a rehabilitation program, in accordance with the standards required for the organization of CAN 2025.

In 2023, an envelope of 225 million DH was the subject of an agreement signed by the Ministry of National Education, Preschool and Sport, the Casablanca City Council, the Prefecture of Casablanca and Sonarges .

In 2016, the Complex was closed in order to redevelop the lawn, the stands, as well as other equipment. Then, in 2019, the stadium was closed again to repair the toilets and, once again, the stands. In 2020, the enclosure is closed to make way for the redevelopment of the lighting system.

Except that at the start of 2023, zone 6 is completely closed, after supporters shared videos where we see the structure of the stands wobble dangerously. Zone 6 was reopened a few months later, for the Champions League final.

All these facelift operations cost a whopping 500 million DH.

According to several statements from elected officials in the economic capital, the long-awaited reopening of “Donor” is planned for March 2025. Its opening should relieve Raja and Wydad, the two giants of the metropolis.

As a reminder, the rehabilitation of the Mohammed V complex aims to increase the capacity of the stadium, the rehabilitation of the press stand and the VIP stand, the installation of new numbered seats as well as the renovation of the fence in iron. The renovation was also to concern the Olympic swimming pool and the facade of the complex as well as the creation of a football museum.
