FC Barcelona seems to have found a new strategy to manage the contractual renewals of its executives, and Ronald Araujo is the latest example. Extended until 2031, the Uruguayan defender saw his release clause increase from 1 billion to 65 million euros for the summer of 2025, an amount which would increase to 80 million from January 2026, as stated by the daily Sport. An approach reminiscent of that adopted for Ousmane Dembélé in 2022, when the club accepted a reduced exit clause to extend the French winger in a tense financial context. Through this method, Barça ensures a lucrative transfer in the event of departure while offering the player greater decision-making freedom.
Barça secures a departure
This model, which allowed Dembélé to join PSG for 50 million euros, now seems to be a card that Barça is playing to reconcile economic constraints and sporting ambitions. For Araujo, this clause would allow European clubs to afford a world-class defender at an attractive price, while encouraging the Uruguayan to quickly clarify his intentions. If the Frenchman’s history has shown the risks of this type of mechanism, it has also allowed Barça to better negotiate its interests, without compromising the commitment of the players in the short term. Araujo, the club’s second captain, could well be the next to write a new chapter in this strategy.
