Cole Caufield is truly having a remarkable season. With a haul of 24 goals in 47 games, he is only five goals away from beating his personal best in a season.
The Canadian’s number 13 has a lightning shot that can pass through any goalie in the NHL, especially when he is in a very good scoring position, like in the slot, for example.
When he shoots from the slot at five-on-five this season, Caufield has a success rate identical to that of a certain Alex Ovechkin. This is what François-David Rouleau of the Journal de Montréal reports, who relied on statistics from Sportlogiq.
This season, Caufield has managed to score on 9.7% of his shots taken from the slot at five-on-five. Ovechkin has the same success rate. There is something to be proud of for the young sniper from CH.
Caufield’s 9.7% rate is good for 34th in the entire NHL. The players who occupy the top of the rankings in this regard are often players who have not taken many shots. This is why Adam Gaudette of the Senators ranks first with a rate of 15.6%.
The former Canadian is not far behind with a success rate of 13.7%.
Returning to Caufield’s success rate of 9.7%, we can note that he has more than doubled his efficiency compared to last year. In the 2023-24 season, he had just a 4.4% success rate on shots from the slot at five-on-five.
Caufield is effective on the power play this season, but he really stood out on the power play. 17 of his 24 goals were scored at five-on-five.
Caufield’s effectiveness can be seen during matches. When he finds himself in an excellent scoring position, he often takes advantage of his chance. We can take an example from this goal against the Capitals, when he was all alone in front of the opposing goalie.
-His powerful shot also allows him to get through defenders. This is what he recently demonstrated against the Canucks.
Caufield owes this efficiency somewhat to the multiple passes his teammates completed in the slot this season. Nick Suzuki has served him 15 so far, just ahead of Juraj Slafkovsky’s nine and Lane Hutson’s eight.
Caufield can, however, throw flowers at himself, because to receive so many passes in the slot, you have to be good enough to stand out from opposing defenders.
