NFL: Joe Mixon fined… for something he didn’t say

HOUSTON (AP) — Joe Mixon was fined $25,000 by the NFL for something he didn’t say after the Texans lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in the playoffs, according to the running back and his agent.

In a postgame interview, Mixon was asked about the referees after the Texans defense received two different penalties for roughing quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The two penalties extended the Chiefs’ offensive streak, leading to 10 crucial points for the Chiefs in a 23-14 victory.

“Everyone knows how it plays out. You can’t leave anything in the hands of the referees, Mixon said. The whole world sees it. We cannot leave anything in the hands of the referees. But everything is good. »

Former Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver TJ Houshmandzadeh supported Mixon, writing, “Why play this sport if every decision that is 50/50 goes to the Chiefs’ advantage?” These referees are trash who are not impartial. »

The Sports Illustrated originally attributed Houshmandzadeh’s remarks to Mixon in a recent text. The NFL later cited the “50/50” comment to explain Mixon’s fine, according to the running back and his agent Peter Schaffer.

“I’m being fined by the @nfl for what someone else said. What next? I will be fined for Connor McDavid’s double-check on an opponent in an @nhl game! “, Mixon wrote on social media on Wednesday.

Schaffer told ESPN that they will contest the fine.

“We will defend Joe and we have appealed the fine. We will explore all other legal options to rectify the situation. This has to stop,” Schaffer said.
