“1,500 fewer students in primary education”: in Ille-et-Vilaine, why the drop in demographics is impacting schools

“For the start of the school year in September 2025, we are expecting a drop of 1,500 primary school students in Ille-et-Vilaine.” While the first orientations of the 2025 school map will be presented on February 25, the academic director of Ille-et-Vilaine Marc Teulier expects a significant drop in the number of students in primary and elementary schools, public and private combined. . “The department loses a significant number of students each year, around 1,000 per year. But estimates show that this trend is accelerating since we lost 1,300 students at the start of the 2024 school year.”

“Preserve schools in rural areas”

Figures likely to suggest a higher number of class closures at the start of the school year? And a declining number of teachers? Not necessarily, according to the academic director. “At the start of the 2024 school year, it is the first time that our resources have decreased, with less than two positions in primary education out of more than 4,000 teachers in Ille-et-Vilaine. It would not be scandalous if we experienced a slight drop in our resources, but it will not be proportional to the drop in the number of students. And the 4,000 job cuts at the national level of the previous government were canceled. »

As for class closures and openings, Marc Teulier is not currently considering a more marked rebalancing for the start of the 2025 school year. “There are some every year, but the gap between rural areas and the metropolis is diminishing in demographic level. And if the metropolis always tends to gain inhabitants and rural areas to lose them, the academic management wishes to “preserve the school in rural areas, where the impact of a class closure is stronger than in the city “.

More replacement teachers and AESH?

Marc Teulier also showed his desire to “create a certain number of positions for students with disabilities, but also more AESH and specialized positions for students with behavioral disorders, but also increase the number of substitute teachers”.

No precise figures to be expected at the moment, the final directions will be taken when the school map for the 2025 school year is approved. “The first forecasts are completed in February, after consultation with elected officials and representatives of teaching staff. A second body will meet at the end of June to decide on the situations which were still uncertain. »
