FIFA is considering reducing the number of stadiums selected to host matches for the 2030 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by Morocco, Spain and Portugal. Currently, 21 stadiums have been proposed for this global event.

According to Cadena SER, FIFA considers that the current number of stadiums (20 cities) is too high in relation to the scale of the competition. The organization could thus reduce this number by excluding two or three stadiums in Spain and Morocco.

For its part, the Infobae newspaper indicated that FIFA is considering excluding one stadium in Morocco and two in Spain. For Morocco, the stadium potentially affected would be that of Fez, while in Spain, the Riazor stadiums in La Coruña and Anoeta in San Sebastian could be excluded.

However, these decisions are not yet final. The fact that this issue is being debated shows the pressures on FIFA to ensure a successful staging of the 2030 World Cup, which will be the first to take place in three countries and two continents.

Reducing the number of host stadiums could cause political and sporting tensions, particularly in candidate cities which have invested heavily in improving their infrastructure and preparing their stadiums in accordance with international standards.

These investments aimed to leverage this event to stimulate economic development and strengthen the tourism and sports sectors.
