WADA will not appeal after Swiatek’s one-month suspension

The World Anti-Doping Agency confirmed on Monday that it is not appealing Iga Swiatek’s one-month suspension to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The Pole had tested positive for trimetazidine in August 2024 during a test carried out out of competition.

Second good news of the day for Iga Swiatek. Just qualified for the quarter-finals of the Australian Open after her performance against Eva Lys in less than an hour (6-0, 6-1), the Pole has just learned this Monday that the Agency World Anti-Doping Authority would not appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport after the one-month suspension of the world number 2, who tested positive for trimetazidine in August 2024 during a test carried out out of competition. Private Asian tour and falling back to second place in the WTA, the Pole was able to participate in the end-of-season Masters and the Billie Jean King Cup before the announcement of her positive test, while the duration of her sanction was almost coming to an end.

Sinner will have to explain himself to the CAS

“WADA’s scientific experts have confirmed that the specific scenario of melatonin contamination, as presented by the athlete and accepted by the ITIA, is plausible and that there is no scientific reason to dispute it before the CAS”, indicates WADA in a press release.

WADA also indicates that it has sought the advice of “an external legal advisor”. The latter considered that “the explanation of the athlete’s contamination was well supported, that the ITIA’s decision was in accordance with the World Anti-Doping Code and that there was no reasonable basis for appealing to the CAS .”

The Swiatek affair is therefore now definitively closed, unlike that concerning Jannik Sinner. Cleared by an independent tribunal requested by the International Agency for Integrity (Itia), after having tested positive for clostebol (an anabolic) twice in March 2024, Jannik Sinner remains under threat of sanction, WADA having filed an appeal with the CAS in September and requesting a one to two year suspension against the Italian.

Still in the running to defend his title at the Australian Open, the world number one will have to explain himself to the CAS on April 16 and 17, 2025.
