Times have been more difficult lately for Logan Mailloux in Laval.
The defenseman – who will participate in the American League All-Star Game – has only collected four points (one goal) in his last 22 games.
He is in a slack period.
Maybe it coincides with the fact that he plays less on the power play too.
Pascal Vincent decided to take some ice off him when the club found himself with a man advantage and last week I said in a text that it was normal to ask questions seeing that the Mailloux’s role is changing.
But the Rocket head coach explained yesterday on BPM Sports that there is a reason behind the fact that Mailloux plays less on the power play.
And without saying that it’s entirely Lane Hutson’s fault… Let’s say that the little CH defender plays his role (despite himself) in Pascal Vincent’s decisions:
If I had a short-term vision, he (Mailloux) would be on the first powerplay. We would focus on that and we would develop its skills on the numerical advantage. – Pascal Vincent
The Rocket pilot then explains that in the long term, he does not necessarily see Mailloux playing on the first numerical advantage in Montreal because it is Lane Hutson who occupies that place.
And barring an upset, Hutson won’t be going down anytime soon.
Pascal Vincent therefore wants to find a solution so that his defender will be able to help the CH in another way when he is ready to make the jump to the NHL.
In Laval, we also want him to improve without the puck:
Pascal Vincent’s comments are interesting.
He did not hide his game and he wanted to rectify the situation because again, there were doubts which were beginning to settle in the heads of some.
There, it’s clearer.
That said, Logan Mailloux has the talent to be a good offensive defenseman in the National League. We saw it this season, when he collected three points in five games during his (brief) stint with the Montreal Canadiens.
But to become a good NHL player, you can’t just be good at one thing.
Just as we saw his offensive qualities in Montreal this season, we also saw that he had a lot work to do in his zone or when he is not in opposing territory and this is what the group of coaches is currently working on in Laval.
It holds up. And we agree that the Canadiens’ management has a say in these decisions, especially seeing Hutson be so good since the start of the season…
