The Guingamp local court was called on this Friday, January 10, 2025 to judge a 36-year-old man, already convicted 27 times, mainly for various thefts.

It is also by videoconference from the Saint-Brieuc remand center, where he is already serving an eleven-month sentence, that the defendant appears at the hearing.

On July 26, a Guingamp merchant, specializing in the purchase and sale of gold, returned home. Exceptionally, due to the Olympic Games, no carrier was able to ensure the delivery of its latest purchases. So it was home that she brought gold jewelry with a total weight of 200 grams.

While she was at home, neighbors alerted her, they had just found her bag in the street. The victim did not realize the theft, his front door was not locked.

Denounced by his mother, who was also present in the courtroom

Two days after the theft, it was the perpetrator’s own mother who went to the gendarmerie: she had just discovered part of the loot in her son’s room. In addition to the 200 grams of gold, the person concerned had “acquired” ten gold Louis with a market value of nearly 500 euros each and various keys.

From the remand center, the defendant apologized and insisted that everything had been returned, he had not yet sold anything.

The president of the court tells him that the procedure reveals that almost all of the stolen jewelry is missing, as well as a Louis d’Or.

The defendant seems not to understand: “I was sure I had returned everything, at the time, I was taking Seresta with alcohol, everything was confused in my head. I’m not proud of it,” he says.

A psychological shock for the victim

The victim, also present at the hearing, specifies that she had to change all the locks of her business and her home: her damage exceeds 10,000 euros, she also indicates that she is afraid of reprisals and has been under treatment since the events. .

The defendant has also been under treatment since his incarceration and wishes to apologize once again for what he did, then he adds: “I’m 36 years old, I’m fed up with prison, I want to start a new life.”

Then the two lawyers disagree. For that of the victim, there is no possible doubt, the defendant carried out a search beforehand to find out the address of his client’s home. “She was not chosen at random.”

His colleague, who has defended the defendant for several years, does not share this opinion. His client has always acted out of opportunity, you only have to see his different and varied loot, “his modus operandi has always been the same”.

Regular at the center square in Guingamp

For the public prosecutor, who also knows the accused well, “his stronghold is indeed the central square in Guingamp”, the location of the victim’s business. For him, there is also little doubt about the location.

He specifies: “I hear that the defendant is fed up with prison but society and the justice system are fed up with his thefts.”

This magistrate requires a sentence of 12 months’ imprisonment, three of which are accompanied by a probationary suspension prohibiting him from appearing in Guingamp.

After deliberating, the court confirms the sentence requested by the public prosecutor, but the ban on appearing will be limited to the area around the business and the victim’s home.

He will also have to compensate the latter, once the latter has provided more precise information on the amount of his damage.
