Ohio has placed Sean Monahan on injured reserve with a wrist injury.
At this time, the severity of his injury or the length of his absence is unknown, but the team’s general manager, Don Waddell, was hopeful that the absence would be short. However, he clarified that his wrist was very swollen.
Monahan was having an excellent season with the team he joined over the summer with 41 points, including 14 goals, in as many games so far. He was heading towards the best season of his career since 2018-2019, when he scored 82 points in 78 games with the Calgary Flames.
The former Montreal Canadiens, Winnipeg Jets and Flames opted for Columbus during the off-season to play with his former teammate and good friend Johnny Gaudreau. The latter, however, tragically lost his life last August after being hit by a driver while he was cycling with his brother.
To make up for his absence, the team led by Dean Evason has entrusted the reins of the first trio to young Adam Fantilli for Thursday evening’s meeting.
Furthermore, Quebecer Mathieu Olivier, who is also having an excellent campaign in a very different role, replaced Monahan as assistant captain.
The Blue Jackets are currently in the heart of the playoff race in the Eastern Conference. Heading into Thursday’s games, they were in second place among drafted teams.
