Three Swiss women are close to entering the main draw of the Australian Open. Viktorija Golubic, Rebeka Masarova and Jil Teichmann advanced to the 3rd round of qualifying on Wednesday.
Seeded number 2 in these qualifiers, Golubic (WTA 90) had no doubts against the Brazilian Laura Pigossi (WTA 141). The Zurichoise, 16th finalist in Melbourne in 2024, won 6-2 6-2 in 1h27′ of play. She will try to obtain her ticket for the main draw of the first Grand Slam of the year against the American Sachia Vickery (WTA 208), against whom she lost in qualifying for the 2023 US Open.
Rebeka Masarova (WTA 144), who once again defends the colors of Switzerland after having represented Spain for a long time, will challenge the Ukrainian Daria Snigur (WTA 139) after her 6-4 7-5 success against the Czech Anna Karolina Schmiedlova (WTA 114). As for the Bienne Jil Teichmann (WTA 133), victorious over the British Francesca Jones (WTA 153) in three sets (4-6 7-6 (15/13) 6-3) after having saved three match points, she will face the Czech Sara Bejlek (WTA 156) on Thursday.
Jerome Kym out
Stan Wawrinka and Dominic Stricker will not be joined by Jérôme Kym. The 21-year-old Aargau native (ATP 135) bowed down against Frenchman Clément Chidekh (ATP 191) while leading a set to zero (6-7 (0/7) 6-3 6-2). He will still have to wait before entering the main draw of a Grand Slam for the first time.
