Last disappointing at Sclessin: Standard picked up cold against Ghent despite a hot atmosphere

A Standard has two faces

In the first half, Standard served its usual soup. Ivan Leko's players held back, without many offensive weapons. On several occasions, Mathieu Epolo had to warm his gloves. Particularly during the first quarter of an hour when Ghent could have opened the scoring without a big mix-up from a corner.

In the second quarter of an hour, the Liégeois balanced the exchanges, without however managing to appear dangerous in front of the goal defended by Davy Roef. The people of Ghent then picked up the pace. Dean tried his hand at distance but didn't fit.

In the 41st minute of play, following a delivery from Brown, Gandelman thought he had opened the scoring but found himself in an illegal position. Just before returning to the locker room, Ghent could have taken the advantage. On a ball cleared as best he could by Lawrence, Watanabe passed in front of his opponent and shifted Hjulsager whose left-footed shot narrowly missed.

In the second half, Leko's men will find color again. Particularly under the leadership of Camara who was able to wake up the players a little. Price thought he would liberate the Burning City. But the Briton was flagged offside after a perfect serve from Ayensa. A few minutes later, it was Kuabita who missed a header which had to end in the bottom.

The Rouches continued to push but were going to be picked off on the counterattack. Well launched, Ito tried his luck which was diverted by Epolo. Surdez followed well to head the ball into the empty goal. A pivotal moment where the public pushed for their team to lead.

This goal will cut off the legs of Standard who, with this defeat, leaves their opponent in the top 6 with a six-point lead. A bad operation despite the good second half which deserved better.
