After 8 years of absence, the great return of the Marquesas Games

While the To’a Mo’a is currently taking place in the Raromatai, in the Marquesas hundreds of athletes are competing in 8 disciplines included in these new Marquesas Games, 8 years after the last edition.

These are the best athletes from the entire archipelago who have been meeting since Sunday in Nuku Hiva in 8 disciplines on the occasion of these Marquesas Games: football, futsal, pétanque, table tennis, va’a, basketball, volleyball, and tu’aro ma’ohi.

In addition to the 700 athletes, 53 coaches and 34 referees are present to supervise each sports competition.

The atmosphere was good-natured yesterday at the Taiohae bowling alley for the pétanque competition: head to head, doublette, and triplette. Pétanque is a widely practiced sport in the Marquesas and the level of players is quite high. “3 years ago, the triplet [des Marquises] still reached the semi-final, and Bora won the tournament during the selectives in Tahiti.”specifies Peniamina Tefaafana responsible for the pétanque referees of Polynesia.

Good atmosphere and fair play were also present on the volleyball court during the women’s matches of the morning, the referees of the Tahitian federation noted the good will and dynamism of the Marquesan players, even if the discipline remains to be professionalized .

Finally, the va’a was in the spotlight, particularly with the women’s V6 marathon and then the mixed V12 race. The first medal presentations took place in Pahaatea and it was Nuku Hiva who won the gold medal in both races, followed by the rowers from Ua Pou.
