Freyr Alexandersson was sacked at KV Kortrijk on Tuesday. But could anyone else do better with this group? Probably not…

It’s now official: Freyr Alexandersson is no longer the coach of Kortrijk. The news was announced this Tuesday evening (read HERE). But is this surprising? Last season, the Kerels were barely relegated. Freyr Alexandersson then performed a small miracle by maintaining them.

But this season, the Icelandic coach was heavily criticized. Supporters had been protesting for several weeks and “Freyr out” banners had been displayed in the stand. But shouldn’t we also look at management? Especially regarding the sporting aspect…

The owner Vincent Tan injected 10 million into the club last summer, but was it a wise decision? The money was mainly used for daily operations and transfers were often free. We quickly recruited Japanese and added a little Belgian experience with Brecht Dejaegere and Gilles Dewaele.

Was it enough? No, the team is not balanced. Already last season it was obvious that the attack needed to be strengthened, but this was not done. With 15 goals in 18 matches, KV Kortrijk is the worst performing team in the Pro League.

With 36 goals conceded, they are only ahead of Beerschot. There is obviously a problem in recruitment. It’s already a small miracle that Alexandersson got 17 points, because qualitatively it’s a bit tight.

The Icelander will not even have been able to defend his position this weekend during the meeting which already promises to be decisive against Beerschot. We wish courage to his successor…
