By deciding not to sell alcohol, FIFA is guarding itself against controversies on the subject which emerged during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Initially authorized, the consumption of alcohol was finally banned around the stadiums two days before the start of the event, under pressure from the ruling Al Thani family. The removal of thousands of tonnes of unsaleable beer from the stadiums then cost FIFA and AB InBEV, owner of Budweiser, official sponsor of the event, nearly 40 million euros.
