MLB: Orioles hire right-handed pitcher Tomoyuki Sugano for one season

Japanese right-handed pitcher Tomoyuki Sugano found a niche in the MLB on Monday as he accepted a one-year offer from the Baltimore Orioles.

The team confirmed the signing, without providing financial details. Network reporter Jeff Passan ESPNwrites that Sugano agreed to a sum of $13 million for the 2025 campaign.

Sugano was the 24th most attractive free agent according to a list compiled by our sister station TSN.

The 35-year-old was one of the top gunners in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) last season, posting a 1.67 ERA and 15-3 record in 24 starts for the Yomiuri Giants, a club based in Tokyo.

Known for his precision more than for the dynamism of his arsenal, Sugano allowed only 16 walks in 156 and two-thirds innings on the mound, in addition to obtaining 111 strikeouts.

A veteran of 12 seasons in the NPB, Sugano has a total of 136 wins against 74 losses in 276 appearances on the mound, all accompanied by a cumulative ERA of 2.43.
