Maxim Sergeyev, this former player who now finds himself in prison for espionage

This story is completely crazy.

Maxim Sergeyev, does that mean anything to you?

We’re talking about a Russian hockey player who played in Poland… But who today finds himself in prison.

The main person concerned was arrested in June 2023 by the Polish police because he was accused of espionage.

According to Rick Westhead, Sergeyev had documents produced by the Wagner Group, a Russian paramilitary group, on his computer at the time of his detention.

That said, he got “stuck” after renting an apartment in Poland, which overlooked a factory that manufactured military equipment for Russia.

He is now serving a nearly three-year prison sentence after pleading guilty:

Maxim Sergeyev – who played as an attacker AND defender – was never drafted by a National League team.

He was playing in the second league in Poland at the time of his arrest and has never played in a professional match since.

It’s crazy how quickly dreams can disappear…

Ultimately, these stories never happen in North America and I don’t need to give you the reasons why.

But still: it remains special. Very special, in fact.
