The person requested anonymity to speak with the AP because the team has not released an official health update. The two-time defending Super Bowl champions usually do not hold media availability on Mondays, but are scheduled to return to practice Tuesday in preparation for their Saturday matchup against the Texans.

Mahomes injured his ankle after being tackled by Dalvin Tomlinson of the Cleveland Browns on fourth down late in a game that ended 21-7 in favor of the Chiefs on Sunday. Mahomes hopped to the sidelines and Carson Wentz took his place on the field, but the Chiefs star quarterback insisted he would have returned to the field if the Browns had managed to get within one touched by them.

Mahomes has suffered numerous ankle injuries throughout his career, including one similar to this one against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2019 season opener.

We especially remember the one he suffered during the 2023 NFL playoffs, when Mahomes was injured during a game against the Jaguars. He then shrugged off the pain and disposed of the Cincinnati Bengals for the American Association title, before beating the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl.

The Chiefs quarterback has less time to recover since the team only has a short week before facing the Houston Texans on Saturday. This short week will be followed by an even shorter one, as the Chiefs travel to Pittsburgh to face the Steelers on Christmas Day.

The Chiefs (13-1) are two games ahead of the Buffalo Bills for first place in the American League. The Bills, however, hold the tiebreaker. The Texans are assured of the title in the South section of the American, while the Steelers lead in the North of the American and are qualified for the playoffs.

The Chiefs will end their season against the Broncos in Denver.
