For the Flames, the program will be heavy, whatever happens. It is therefore difficult to have a preference even if Ives Serneels and his captain Tessa Wullaert have a common wish: “Avoid England and Spain! That would be perfect. It is true that Belgium has faced these two teams over the last thirteen months (in the first phase of the WNL and in qualifying for the Euro)… and they will meet them again in the next Nations League campaign which begins in February (with Portugal as 3rd opponent). Moreover, theoretically, they could inherit the same group at the Euro as in the League of Nations. A Christmas present they might not really appreciate. On the other hand, they will not be able to relive the group stage of Euro 2022 since two of these opponents, Iceland and Italy, are in the same pot.
Falling into Group A of Switzerland, the host country, will offer Belgium, in addition to the least famous opponent on paper in Pot 1, a match at the Thun Arena on the first day of the tournament, facing a team from pot 4 while the inaugural match will take place at St. Jakob Park in Basel on July 2 and will see Switzerland face the opponent from pot 2. With a little luck, they could fall into one of the less energy-intensive groups in kilometers, B or D. The final will be held in Basel on July 27.
