Antwerp once again lost points at KV Mechelen. It could have been worse for the Great Old though, as Denis Odoi may have escaped a red card.
It was tense at times during the duel between KV Mechelen and Antwerp, and Denis Odoi was of course at the forefront of the battle. And if he ended the match with a yellow card, Odoi may have escaped worse.
A few minutes earlier, the Antwerp midfielder threw himself with both feet forward at Rob Schoofs. He certainly first touched the ball, but then the foot of the Mechelen midfielder.
He was lucky his foot wasn’t on the ground. Referee Wim Smet strangely did not whistle and Antwerp were able to counterattack. This even gave a very big opportunity that Bataille inexplicably missed.
The crowd at the AFAS Stadion were of course furious and even on the bench they were asking for a card for Odoi. We have indeed already seen red cards for similar tackles where the ball was touched first, but the intensity and manner sanctioned by VAR.
Judge for yourself: Did Odoi deserve a (red?) card here or not?
