The American won in Grenoble ahead of five Japanese skaters, including the favorite Kaori Sakamoto.
The American Amber Glenn won the final of the Skating Grand Prix on Saturday in Grenoble, beating a quintet of Japanese women, including the favorite Kaori Sakamoto. Glenn totaled 212.07 points at the end of his two programs, each time punctuated by his flagship element, the triple axel. In the lead after the short on Thursday, she confirmed her lead in the free.
The women’s category of the event, the highlight of the first half of the season, had the feel of the Japanese championships with five Japanese representatives out of the six skaters competing. But it was the American who triumphed, ahead of Mone Chiba (208.85 pts) and Kaori Sakamoto (201.13 pts). The latter, defending champion and three-time reigning world champion, had not been beaten in a major competition since the final of the 2022 Grand Prix. In Grenoble, she lost numerous points by falling on her triple toe loop in the short program.
At 25 years old and 14 months before the next Winter Games, Glenn confirms her rise to the forefront, having not won any international title before this season. She becomes the first American skater to win the event, the third most important competition in skating after the Olympics and the World Championships, since Alissa Czisny in 2010.
