Through the NHL: Dustin Tokarski as reinforcement in Carolina

The Carolina Hurricanes have recalled goaltender Dustin Tokarski from the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League, while goaltender Spencer Martin has gone the opposite route.

The recall comes two days after the Hurricanes offered Tokarski a one-year, two-way contract. The former Montreal Canadiens has a 4-1-0 record with the Wolves this season and has a save percentage of .933 and a goals against average per game of 1.61.

Tokarski, who is 35, becomes the reserve goaltender for the Hurricanes, who are still without injured Frederik Andersen.

Pyotr Kochetkov continues to occupy the No. 1 position in Carolina, posting a 10-3-0 record this season, a .900 save percentage and a 2.55 GAA.

Kirkland’s season is over

Calgary Flames forward Justin Kirkland will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing knee surgery.

Kirkland was injured during last Friday’s 5-2 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets, leaving the game after having 1:05 of ice time.

The 28-year-old center has two goals and eight points in 21 games this season, his first with the Flames.

Kirkland had already set an NHL career high in goals, assists and points this season. He didn’t have a point in nine games with the Arizona Coyotes and Anaheim Ducks during the previous season.

The Winnipeg native signed a one-year contract worth $775,000 with the Flames as a free agent last summer.

He was selected by the Nashville Predators in the third round of the 2014 draft, but never played for the team.

Calgary continues to battle for a playoff spot this season, currently sitting in first place among drafted teams with a 13-9-4 record.
