Aston Martin F1 team boss Mike Krack has defended Fernando Alonso over his radio outburst in Qatar.
After having denounced several times in recent weeks that the AMR24 was the car “slowest or second slowest” of the season, the double world champion lost his cool on the radio last Sunday.
He declared that he “couldn’t believe it – two years with the same problem on the straights”.
Ultimately, Alonso finished 7th and Aston Martin F1 is fifth in the overall constructors’ standings, behind only the top four teams.
Asked about Alonso’s anger, Krack played it down.
“We must remember that we are human beings who fight for everything and try to always give our best. Sometimes feedback must be allowed to vent that frustration.”
“We shouldn’t judge him too much because we also know how we all react at certain times.”
Krack says F1 drivers should not be condemned for expressing their emotions.
“It’s even appealing for the viewer to see that emotion. We all want to see human emotions and if we have them, we need to express them. Especially if we can end with a smile.”
At the same time, Krack says the Aston Martin team is well aware that it needs to field a much better car in 2025.
“The most important thing for the team is that we came away from many races without points. It’s especially difficult when you have a hat-trick of races and then come home without points, so getting points is a good reward for all the good work and motivates us to make our 2025 F1 much better.”
Krack also insists that Alonso very rarely criticizes the team.
“Our two pilots have not accepted this situation, they challenge us internally. Externally, they are excellent team players, and that helps a lot, obviously, because if the difficulties are carried outside, It becomes much more difficult.”
“We had a good start in 2023 and since then it hasn’t really progressed. And they have the microphone in front of them every time they get out of the car and are faced with negative questions. And when there is frustration and adrenaline, it’s very difficult to stay positive, which they did. So, congratulations to them.
