It’s clear that over the years, the Canadian hasn’t exactly managed Cayden Primeau well.

How is it that during his four seasons in , the netminder was not able to play more than 41 regular season games? Why didn’t he get a lot of playing time?

123 regular season games (and 16 in the playoffs) plus 54 games in Montreal: in his sixth full-time year in the pros, Primeau has remained healthy, but he has not yet exceeded the 200 game threshold.

This is too little, obviously.

But when you look at it, it’s clear that there were times when Primeau wasn’t able to play because he was in Montreal when he wasn’t completely trusted.

It happened often, during his years in Laval, that he was recalled for the simple purpose of warming up the second goalie seat in Montreal due to an upper injury. At that time, he didn’t play much.

And his development took a hit.

Obviously, we also have to talk about the ménage à trois, which means that for two years, he hasn’t played much. These are all aspects that cause the goalkeeper to develop poorly.

And in the eyes of Stéphane Waite, who was his first goalie coach in the NHL, Primeau saw his development be scrapped by the Canadian. This is what he said to the Sortie de zone podcast and that Alexandre Pratt (La Presse) reported in a paper on the subject.

Waite points out that this was not intentional, but that these aspects come into play. Same thing for COVID-19, by the way.

I don’t feel that Waite is criticizing the way he was coached (he will not target himself), but more the circumstances. He is perhaps targeting Marc Bergevin more, who was supposed to recall Primeau for lack of other options on the table.

Obviously, no one is saying that Primeau is not a good goalie only due to the circumstances since to be one of the worst goalkeepers of the last 25 years, it still has to be as A little the goalkeeper’s fault.

But Pratt raises a good point: are we going to end up seeing Primeau for what he is instead of saying that he could be this goalkeeper, à la Samuel Montembeault, who has what it takes to take a big step forward?
