Inter Miami announced the arrival of Javier Mascherano as coach.
The former Argentinian international (40 years old) takes over from his compatriot Tata Martino and has signed until the end of the 2027 Major League Soccer (MLS) season.
“Throughout his career, whether among the best players in the world or as a coach, Javier has always proven what makes him great: constant determination, combined with great knowledge, remarkable instinct and a good understanding of the game,” Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham said in a statement. “We are very excited to welcome him to lead our team. »
Mascherano takes the reins of a team where many stars of world Football coexist. Among them are four of his former teammates at FC Barcelona: world champions Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets, as well as Luis Suárez and Jordi Alba.
Mascherano already has plenty of experience on the bench having been the coach of the Argentina team at the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament, Paris 2024, where the Albiceleste reached the quarter-finals.
“Being able to lead a club like Inter Miami is an honor for me and a privilege that I will strive to make the most of,” Mascherano said in a statement. “I was attracted by the undeniable ambition of this franchise and its infrastructure. I look forward to working with everyone at Inter Miami to help the club reach new heights and provide fans with unforgettable moments. »
This year, Inter Miami – a franchise created in 2020 – won the Supporters Shield, crowning the best team of the regular season in MLS. The Herons, however, saw their MLS Cup run come to an abrupt end in the first round, against Atlanta United.
An important 2025 awaits Mascherano and Inter Miami. In addition to participating in the MLS regular season and the Leagues Cup, as well as the Concacaf Champions Cup, Inter Miami will compete in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup™, which will take place in the United States in June and July next year.
