GTWC Europe – Barcelona race 1 classification canceled!

Race 1 of the GT World Challenge Europe Sprint Cup Final in Barcelona had endured a hectic 60 minutes with just three green flag laps.

First there was an accident involving an Audi / Tresor Attempto Racing and a Mercedes / Winward Racing, then the arrival of rain and finally divergent opinions on the management of the neutralization. The race was neutralized until the opening of the driver change window which was not moved (between the 25th and 35th minute).

Once the finish line was reached, Team WRT appealed the classification of race 1 which until now remained suspenseful. The National Court of Appeal has ruled and the classification of race 1 of the Barcelona race is purely and simply canceled. No points are therefore distributed for this race, which does not fundamentally change the ranking of the Sprint championship.

In addition to WRT which appealed, Emil Frey Racing was in the loop as an “interested party”.

The sports prosecutor argued that the conditions of the race were extremely difficult (early collision, incidents, bad weather…), which meant that the competitors were not able to fight on equal terms. These circumstances meant that the race lasted only a few minutes.

The Sports Prosecutor is of the opinion that arts. 20.5.1 and 20.5.2. of the Fanatec GT World Challenge (FGTWC SR) sporting regulations have not been correctly applied.

In this context, awarding points to certain competitors would be unfair since race results are not based on merit and fairness. Therefore, he requested that the appeal be considered well-founded and that the results of the race be annulled and no points awarded. He also calls for SRO, the organizer, to be reprimanded for failing to respond appropriately in accordance with the regulations in place. According to the Court, displaying a red flag would have been preferable.
