La Gantoise supporters – and Wouter Vrancken – reacted strongly during the match against Anderlecht, believing that Colin Coosemans should have been sent off after a contentious duel with Max Dean.
According to them, the Mauves goalkeeper deserved a red card for holding back the Ghent striker. Colin Coosemans gave his version of the facts after the match.
During the action in question, a control error by Coosemans allowed Dean to come dangerously close to the ball. The goalkeeper briefly grabbed his opponent’s jersey to slow him down slightly, an action which aroused the indignation of the opposing camp. The footage does show that Coosemans pulled on Dean’s jersey outside the box, but very briefly.
“I held him back for a fraction of a second,” explained the goalkeeper after the meeting. “It was too light to be called a foul.” When a journalist from DAZN Asked if he would have felt the same way if the situation had been reversed, Coosemans replied without hesitation: “Absolutely. To me it wasn’t a mistake, and I wouldn’t consider it as such if it made me had arrived.”
This controversy did not tarnish Anderlecht’s 6-0 victory, which left its mark. “It’s a great performance, especially as we show that we can also shine in big matches. During the first twenty minutes, La Gantoise was on the same level as us and created some dangerous situations,” said -he recognized.
However, the turning point of the match was the expulsion of Torunarigha. “It’s true that the red card made things a lot easier for us, we have to admit.”
Finally, when asked about his favorite goal on that memorable evening, Coosemans smiled: “It’s hard to choose between Dolberg’s first and second. But if I had to decide, I’d say the second.” A wink to conclude an almost perfect evening for the Mauves.
