From the start, the Lorraine had to raise his level to beat Alexander Shevchenko. Pushed to the fifth set, the Frenchman won in more than three hours, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6(2), (3)6-7, 6-1. A great performance especially since the French number 1 has never really shone in five sets. Before this Wimbledonhe had a record of eight defeats for two victories in five-set matches. “Matches like this prove to me that physically I’m in good shape”
“It was a bad start. I stayed calm, that’s what I wanted to achieve today.. Even when I felt like I wasn’t playing at a great level, I managed to stay consistent,” welcomed Humbert in remarks reported by The team. “It was a milestone to cross. I talked about it a lot to my team and my shrink. I had a hard time gaining confidence in my physique. I worked. Matches like that prove to me that I’m physically fine, that I can win matches in five sets.”
