Algeria Football – About a year before the start of the African Cup of Nations (CAN), Morocco made a promise to CAF.
Uncertainties remain about Morocco’s ability to deliver the stadiums within the deadlines set by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for the 2025 African Cup of Nations (CAN). Although Moroccan officials have made reassuring statements, the reality on the ground seems less obvious.
Fouzi Lekjaa, president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, and his colleagues insisted that the work is progressing according to schedule. According to them, the infrastructure would be ready well before the deadline, offering six modernized stadiums, 24 training grounds and high standard hotel infrastructure. These assertions are accompanied by ambitious promises, describing this edition of the CAN as “the most successful in history”. However, these announcements leave many observers skeptical, who believe that they are more window dressing statements.
Indeed, regular inspections on construction sites reveal an intensified pace of work, but some reports suggest that fundamental work, particularly on the pitches and stands, has not yet been finalized. These delays, although downplayed by Moroccan officials, raise doubts about the country’s ability to deliver infrastructure on time. In addition, the past of Lekjaa and his team, often accused of “blabbering” or exaggerated communication, calls for caution.
Morocco, which is also banking on this work to prepare for the 2030 World Cup, is playing big on these deadlines. However, until the stadiums are officially delivered and validated by CAF, it remains prudent to adopt a “wait and see” approach. The ambitions are high, but only timely delivery will prove that these declarations are not just empty words.
