EUROPEAN HERITAGE DAYS: A NOD TO THE JOLIOT-CURIE

This year 2024 marks the 90 years since the discovery of artificial radioactivity by Irène and Frédéric Joliot-Curie in January 1934. This discoverycarried out at the Curie laboratory of the Radium Institute, earned them the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1935.

This couple and this historical event will be highlighted during a thematic visit which will immerse you in the fascinating story of Frédéric and Irène Joliot-Curie, and in unique collections linked to their research on Saturday September 21 at 1 p.m. and then to be found every 2nd Saturday of the month.

  • In addition to the visit to the museum and its exhibition temporary “With the Joliot-Curies, it was physical!”films will be screened in the Marie Curie amphitheaterlocated next to the museum: Saturday, September 21 at 3 p.m.“The Spirit of Arcouest as told by Hélène Langevin-Joliot” by Florence Riou (duration: 1h15), followed by a meeting with the film crew.

FOCUS

SPORT IN THE 1930S WITH THE JOLIOT-CURIE

« Through this exhibition we hope to reveal another side of the Joliot-Curies on the occasion of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. »

Renaud Huynh, director of the Curie Museum.

Marie Curie, Frédéric and Irène Joliot-Curie are scientists who are world-renowned for their work, but few know their shared passion for outdoor physical activities. However, outside of the laboratories, they practiced many sports such as swimming, cycling, hiking, tennis, skiing, sailing and even gymnastics.

Beyond the intimate approach, thanks to photos from family albums, this exhibition looks back on an era promoting the virtues of sport for health.

To echo the exhibition on grids, The ice skates of Irène and Marie Curie, loaned by their descendant Hélène Langevin-Joliot, are exceptionally exhibited in the museum until January 18, 2025.

About the Curie Museum

The Curie Museum is dedicated to the conservation and promotion of heritage relating to the history of radioactivity and the first medical uses of radiation in the treatment of cancers. A Support and Research Unit between the CNRS and the Curie Institute, it has an exhibition space open to the public, located in the former Curie Laboratory of the Radium Institute, and a historical resource center, accessible by appointment.

The permanent exhibition is divided into 4 thematic parts:

  • The family with five Nobel Prizes
  • Radium, between myth and reality
  • The Curie laboratory, between physics and chemistry
  • The Curie Foundation: treating cancers

Marie Curie’s historic office and her personal chemistry laboratory, preserved as they were after World War II, punctuate the tour. A small garden at the back of the museum is also accessible to the public. The museum is free to visit, donations are accepted.
