Johan Djourou has been appointed sports coordinator of the national women’s A team. One year before “its” Euro, the ASF continues to strengthen its structures.

A 76-time Swiss international, the 37-year-old from Geneva ended his playing career in 2021 in Denmark. The former Arsenal and Hamburg defender, in particular, had been committed in recent months to ensuring that the Women’s Euro 2025, which will be played in Switzerland from July 2 to 27, would not be cut from the financial resources that had initially been allocated to it.

At the end of January, the Federal Council only wanted to support the Euro with 4 million francs. The Council of States finally decided unanimously in mid-March to increase the tournament’s budget to 15 million.

The aim is for this home Euro to leave a lasting impression on women’s football in Switzerland.

In addition to his role with the national team, coached by Sweden’s Pia Sundhage, Johan Djourou will work as project manager for the Footura+ impulse programme as part of the Women’s Euro 2025 legacy.

“I am very happy and proud to join the staff of the women’s national team at this exciting time with the upcoming Euro in Switzerland. I already had the opportunity to experience a Euro in Switzerland in 2008 as a player. I would like it to be a great celebration for everyone: the population, the fans, our players and, above all, the young girls of this country who dream of seeing their idols. The aim is for this Euro at home to leave a lasting impression on women’s football in Switzerland.”explained Djourou, who is also a consultant at RTS for the Swiss men’s team, an expert at RMC Sport and a coach of the FC Lancy U15 women’s team.
