Domenech comments on Deschamps’ new system

Former French coach Raymond Domenech gave his opinion concerning the new tactical device chosen by Didier Deschamps.

Barring any surprises, Didier Deschamps is expected to line up the French team in a 4-4-2 diamond formation on Monday when they face Belgium in the last 16 of the Euro. A change that has won over Raymond Domenech, one of his predecessors on the French bench.

Domenech believes that this new scheme has new advantages. “It already highlights Mbappé, Thuram and Griezmann because they play in their positions. It’s essential. And it’s a good system for attackers who are fast. Dembélé missing? But he hasn’t been too good since the start of the Euro despite his penalty against Poland,” he declared on the L’Equipe channel.

The vice-world champion coach added that it is the system that is best suited to countering the opponent that Les Bleus will face. “I think it’s good compared to Belgiumhe stressed. They will leave the ball to the Belgians, and Griezmann will block it. We will have depth with Thuram and Mbappé and we will have more spaces and therefore possibilities. With this system, we tell them to come. I like this system.

Domenech is therefore excited. However, you should not be too enthusiastic. The last time that DD changed its playing system three times in the space of a tournament, its flock were eliminated at the 8th stage (at Euro 2021, against Switzerland).
