Under fire for choosing a pair of singles players (Ben Shelton and Tommy Paul) rather than doubles specialists (Rajeev Ram and Austin Krajicek) for the deciding doubles against Australia in the quarter-finals of the Davis Cup this Thursday, Bob Bryan, the captain of the United States, made this choice in a post-match press conference, explaining that he had wanted to surprise the Australians and the captain, Lleyton Hewitt.
But when the latter was also questioned by the press, he undermined the strategy of his American counterpart.
“To be honest, we weren't very surprised. I had seen them (Shelton and Paul) training together and doing drills during the week, so it wasn't as surprising as he was hoping. At the end of the day, we knew our team and the players they had to play. Thompson and Ebden have been training here for a few days, adapting to the conditions and gaining a lot of confidence, which is why they took to the court. »
