The FIS told the German press agency SID, an AFP subsidiary, on Wednesday that the American Federation had asked the organizers of the St. Moritz stage for a “wild card” to allow Vonn to compete in Switzerland. , where two super-Gs are on the program on December 21 and 22.
Like Marcel Hirscher, also returning to competition after five years of retirement, Lindsey Vonn can benefit from this new invitation system which allows former skiing glories to return to the world circuit after years away from competitions while benefiting for their return of advantageous bibs.
Lindsey Vonn ended her first career at the age of 34 during the world championships in Are (Sweden) in February 2019, with eight world medals including two titles (downhill and super-G in 2009), three Olympic podiums (gold in downhill in 2010) and what was then the record for World Cup victories for a woman (82), since surpassed by her compatriot Mikaela Shiffrin (98).
At 40, Vonn will however have to ski competitively before the St. Moritz stage, since she must lower her number of FIS points sufficiently before mid-December to be allowed to return to the World Cup.
She could thus line up with the Super-Gs scheduled for December 11 and 12 in Panorama (Canada), which should allow her to participate ten days later in those in Saint-Moritz.
