“The best player I ever played against? Vincent Kompany!”

After a few bad matches for the Red Devils, we become nostalgic for certain moments. Some English players even spoke about the qualities of some of our players. Harry Kane recently called Kevin De Bruyne the ‘best passer in the world’. Shortly after, Jamie Vardy also praised another Belgian, Vincent Kompany.

Jamie Vardy, former England international (7 goals in 26 caps), came across Kompany several times in the Premier League. During an interview, he cited the former Anderlecht player as the best player he played against during his career. The Belgian defender, emblematic figure of Manchester City between 2008 and 2019, marked the history of the championship with his solidity and his leadership, contributing to four English championship titles and numerous other distinctions.

Before his time at Manchester City, Kompany started at Anderlecht before joining Hamburg in the Bundesliga. With Belgium, he accumulated 89 caps and led his team as captain to third place in the 2018 World Cup. Today, he continues his career as a coach, after Anderlecht and Burnley, he currently holds the position as coach of Bayern Munich.

THE HEROES

Jamie Vardy, who arrived at Leicester City in 2012 from Fleetwood Town, wrote one of the most beautiful pages in the history of English football. With 194 goals and 67 assists in 474 appearances, he has become a Foxes legend. His role during Leicester’s incredible 2015-2016 title is always remembered.

A DIFFERENT TRAJECTORY

Before emerging in the Premier League, Vardy rose through the ranks of English football, passing through semi-professional clubs like Stocksbridge and Halifax. His atypical journey, from amateurism to the heights of the English elite, inspires many players playing in the lower divisions.

Kompany and Vardy each embody exemplary careers in their own way. One by his defensive consistency and his leadership, the other by his offensive flair and his resilience. These tributes prove that their impact goes far beyond the playing fields.
