NHL: heart surgery for Islanders defenseman Mike Reilly

The New York Islanders announced Monday that defenseman Mike Reilly will be sidelined indefinitely while he recovers from a heart procedure.

Reilly will go under the knife on Tuesday. in order to correct a heart condition that was already known to doctors.

Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello said it was determined that Reilly needed surgery following a concussion suffered on November 1.

Lamoriello added that it was not the body checking suffered by the 31-year-old guard that caused this situation. The American is fully recovered from the symptoms linked to his concussion.

“The situation was raised during the various ultrasounds that players must undergo for different reasons, including the post-concussion protocol,” said Lamoriello.

“Maybe that’s a blessing in a sense, that it was detected because of these tests,” he continued.

Reilly played in 11 games with the New Yorkers this season, his second with the team, which claimed him off waivers in November 2023. He was then playing for the Florida Panthers.

A fourth round pick (98th overall) of the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2011, Reilly has 411 games in the NHL, with the Minnesota Wild, Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, Boston Bruins, Panthers and the Islanders.
