Sunday took place the traditional “lottery” for the 2025 WNBA Draft, and it was the Dallas Wings who won the jackpot. The logic was respected since the Wings had 45.4% to win the bet, against 44.2% for the Sparks and 10.4% for the Mystics. The Wings had a 45.4% chance of having the 1st pick because they had the advantage of being able to exchange their pick with the Sky, if Chicago won the jackpot.

“We are aware of what the first choices can bring to a franchise”reacted Curt Miller, the new GM of the Wings. “This choice injects new energy and incredible enthusiasm as we look toward the 2025 season.”

The Draft takes place in… five months!

While the Draft will not take place until April 14, the Wings already know the name of their future recruit: Paige Bueckers (1m83, 22 years old). The playmaker made NCAA history in her first season by winning all the major individual trophies. Despite injuries that sidelined her for two seasons, she averages 19.9 points per game in her career, a record for UConn.

Paige Bueckers had already announced that the 2024-2025 season would be her last with the Huskies, despite an additional year of eligibility. “We are looking for a central piece for the team culture, someone who will strengthen the locker room and fit into our style of play” sums up the Dallas GM.

Like Caitlin Clark at Fever, Paige Bueckers has a leadership profile to support Arike Ogunbowale and Teaira McCowan. It remains to be seen whether Satou Sabally and Natasha Howard, free agents, will be retained.
